Because banknotes are typically packaged in 1,000 note bundles, they cannot be destroyed by conventional shredding systems. Prior to the introduction of SEM disintegrators, central banks and their branches were faced with the expense and security risks inherent in returning worn banknotes to their headquarters. In 1975, SEM disintegrators were approved by the United States Treasury and became a standard for currency destruction, and every Federal Reserve Bank was equipped with an SEM disintegrator. SEM currency destruction systems are still the destruction method of choice throughout the United States Federal Reserve System, and also by central banks in Europe, the Americas, and the Pacific Rim.
