The Green Initiative

In today’s “Green” world, both Government and Commercial organizations are constantly looking for ways to execute a “Green Initiative”. Now you may be asking yourself, what is the Green Initiative? It is a way of teaching small and large corporations on how to conserve energy at the work place as well as the benefits of recycling.

As demonstrated by our ISO 14001 Registered Certification (SEM ISO 14001 Registration) Security Engineered Machinery (SEM) takes the Green Initiative very seriously in both the manner in which we conduct business, the products we offer and most importantly, in the way in which we implement our Destruction Service.

When an organization needs material destroyed by a Shredding Service, they aren’t always 100% certain on what happens to the waste. When using these services, you want to make certain that you have done your homework to make sure the Shred Service has a commitment to the environment. Even though your primary concern should be the levels of security at which they are destroying your material, equally important are assurances that the waste is disposed of properly. Ask for a Certificate of Destruction or some other form of documentation that validates their disposal methods. You want to make sure that your material isn’t just sent to a landfill. Recycling should always be the preferred method of disposal. As a “Destruction Service Provider” capable of destroying information on all forms of media (i.e. hard drives, data tapes, optical disks, etc. see: SEM – What we Destroy) down to high security levels that are in accordance with the National Security Agency, SEM does so in a way that meets the Security and Green goals of most organizations (see SEM disposal policy at: SEM – Disposal Policy )

When purchasing equipment, there are a variety of “Green” options available to you. For example, there are shredders that do not require lubrication oil like the SEM 1201 Series of High Security and Cross Cut systems . Other SEM models like the Optical Disk Shredder Model 0202 OMD, offer oil sheets made from “vegetable oil” to lubricate the cutting heads (SEM Model 0202 OMD).

Features to conserve Energy should also be considered. Most of the shredding equipment offered by SEM deploy an ESM (Energy Saving Mode) which automatically shuts down machines when not in use.

Even Magnetic Media Degaussers that do not require any electrical power are available. The SEM Model P3M (SEM Model P3M Deguasser) is operated by a “manual hand crank” which moves the magnetic media (Hard Drive, Data Tapes, etc.) through the data erasing magnetic field and conserves energy in the process.

If you are looking to destroy Hard Drives you may want to consider a Manual Hard Drive Crusher like the SEM Model 0100 (SEM Model 0101 Hard Drive Crusher). This is yet another example of a data security device that requires no electrical power.

While “Data Security” should be always be the primary focus, as demonstrated above, there are many solutions that take into account a commitment to being “Green”. In the end, you can fulfill both your Security needs as well as your “Green Initiatives”.
