High security paper shredders and disintegrators must be evaluated by the NSA to ensure they produce waste particles less than 1mm x 5mm. All NSA evaluated shredders and disintegrators are listed on the Evaluated Products List (EPL) prepared by the NSA. Paper destruction devices are also evaluated and listed by the waste size through DIN. All NSA evaluated shredders are DIN level P-7 by DIN standard 66399.

In addition, the new CUI directive from the US federal government mandates that all government CUI be destroyed to NIST 800-88 guidelines, currently a 1mm x 5mm particle size. CUI includes FOUO, SBU, PII, and any other sensitive document. All SEM high security, NSA listed shredders are approved for CUI paper destruction.
