FACTA - Fair and Accurate Credit Transaction Act of 2003

The Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA) is a Federal Law that makes it compulsory for any entity possesing consumer information for business use to take necessary steps to prevent unauthorized access. As such, document destruction is a key component of any FACTA compliance effort.

In addition to protecting data on paper, FACTA compliance also requires protection of Data on electronic media such as Hard Drives, CDs, DVDs etc.

Additionally, FACTA allows consumers to request and obtain a free credit report once every year.  It also contains provisions to help reduce identity theft by helping individuals place alerts on their credit histories if identity theft is suspected, or if deploying overseas in the military, thereby making fraudulent applications for credit more difficult.
