In an April 2010 story, the CBS News Program 60 MINUTES exposed a little known secret about the existence of hard drives in most photocopiers.

The reporter visited a warehouse where used photo copiers are refurbished for the re-sale market. A repair technician demonstrated the simplicity in which the photo copier hard drives could be removed and more shockingly, how easy it was to view the data stored on them.

One drive examined held an enormous amount of confidential patient medical information.

The obvious lesson is that companies disposing of photo copiers must have a plan in place to ensure that data is not compromised.
